Understanding what I want to do in the future

My goal for researching a new field of interest was so that I could understand which area I was more interested in. I knew I had an interest in both buying and marketing but wanted to gather more information on fashion marketing to get a better understanding of what I want to do in the future.

(Business of Fashion, 2018)

After now having researched both, I have decided that I’m swaying more towards fashion buying. Before conducting this report, I was very unsure on what I wanted to do when I finished university, but after careful consideration gave decided that buying is a better fit for me. While I enjoy the creative aspect of fashion marketing, I also enjoy the more technical side of buying.

While I was researching the fashion marketing industry, I felt like I could be very creative and could get to work with different people which I love, however I like knowing that I can expand my creativity with trend setting. I also love to travel which is why I think this job is better suited to me. I also like the fact the job is very satisfying in that sense I will see people buying and walking down the street in products that I have helped bring to market (Fashion Retail Academy, 2023).

I learned a lot about myself over this semester about what I want to do in the future. I found that I’m able to forecast trends and research them, build relationships with suppliers, develop sales strategies and monitor budgets, and also work internally with other departments if I decided to be a buyer.

Before I changed my research topic, I started looking for potential interviewees and their companies and though I would be a good fit for working with those brands since I already have a background working for a high-end luxury brand:

There are ways in which I can improve my skills before working in the buying industry, especially analytical and numerical. “Fashion buyers need to have a confident grasp of numbers and statistics. I need to be able to analyse data including sales figures, set and manage budgets and be comfortable working with spreadsheets. I also need to make sure I pay Attention to detail is a must as most businesses have strict budgets and deadlines to stick to” (Fashion Retail Academy, 2023).
